Stax icon Bobby Manuel to receive Brass Note on Beale Street October 20, 2018

One of the longest working musicians in the Memphis scene, Bobby Manuel will be honored with a note in the Beale Street Brass Note Walk of Fame on Saturday, October 20, at 2 pm inside BB King’s Blues Club on Beale Street.

Manuel’s guitar has been prominent in Memphis music since the 1960s. He joined Stax Records as an engineer and quickly began doing session work as a guitarist. He played/recorded with Isaac Hayes, Elvis Presley, Al Green, Mavis Staples, Solomon Burke, Albert King, Rufus and Carla Thomas, The Barkays, Little Milton, Shirley Brown, Leon Russell, Billy Joel and dozens more.

He has worked as an engineer and producer and is a composer with over 150 songs to his credit.

He produced the number one hit Disco Duck for Rick Dees.

In 1977 Manuel and Stax Records founder Jim Stewart established Daily Planet, a studio and production company. At Mr. Stewart’s retirement, Manuel founded High Stacks Records with an initial release of a CD featuring former Stax artists, including the great Rance Allen.

In the 1980s he found a new audience playing with local favorites The Coolers.

In 2004 he played the epic “Stax Comes Home” concert at the Orpheum to honor the Stax museum.

He played guitar for “Memphis Soul, In Performance at the White House” for President Obama in 2013, which was shown on PBS.

In 2017 he played in the all-star Royal Studios 60th Anniversary concert at the Orpheum and he also released a new album “Soulsauce.”

Bobby Manuel is in his sixth decade of creating music and is still in demand. He is currently working to produce an album for The Masqueraders.

The Beale Street Brass Note Walk of Fame program was created in 1986 to tie the rich musical tradition of Beale Street to the current entertainment district.
