Stax Museum working with American Alliance of Museums and other agencies amid COVID-19 coronvirus concerns
With the recent news of the first confirmed case of COVD-19 (coronavirus) in Memphis, Tennessee, the Stax Museum of American Soul Music wants to assure the public that we have the wellbeing of all visitors, staff, event attendees, potential visitors, and others as our highest priority. While the risk to Americans remains low and there are no travel restrictions within the United States, the Stax Museum is monitoring the situation regularly and working in conjunction with the American Alliance for Museums, the Shelby County Health Department (SCHD) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to ensure we are following guidelines and best practices set forth by these and other organizations.
In line with current recommendations by the American Alliance for Museums, the Stax Museum wishes to remind its staff, visitors, event attendees, and potential visitors of the CDC’s simple but effective measures each individual can take to help minimize the risk to coronavirus and various strains of the flu and other infectious diseases:
- Washing your hands often, with soap, for 20 seconds
- Using alcohol-based hand sanitizer
- Not touching your face—especially your eyes, nose, or mouth—with unwashed hands
- Monitoring your health
- Avoiding close contact with anyone who is sick
- Staying home when you are sick, except to get medical care
- Covering your coughs and sneezes with tissues
- Cleaning high-touch areas of your home and workspace frequently
- Limiting close contact with others as much as possible (at least six feet)
Along with recommending these measures to museum users, we have reviewed our cleaning and hygiene policy and updated it to reflect the current COVID-19 coronavirus situation. While the Stax Museum always strives to maintain and clean and healthy environment for its guests, it has now added more cleanings per day, especially in high-touch interactive areas of the museum, and has removed close-touch items such as the headphones connected to our Stax Records listening stations. We have placed more alcohol-based hand sanitizers out for public use and placed visible signage for hand-washing reminders and instruction. In addition, the museum staff is now assisting the museum’s custodial staff with “walk-through” cleanings and disinfectant wipe-downs throughout the day.
Amid all the misinformation spreading about COVID-19 coronavirus, the Stax Museum urges everyone to stay up-to-date on the facts about the disease by regularly monitoring the CDC’s “Share Facts about COVID-19 website at https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/about/share-facts.html.
At this time, there are no plans for the Stax Museum to close, change its hours, cancel events, or take any other special measures regarding COVID-19.
