ABOUT THE BOOK

Legendary Memphis drummer Howard Grimes has written his autobiography, Timekeeper: My Life In Rhythm, with acclaimed writer Preston Lauterbach. It’s a first-person, insider account of the birth and expansion of the Memphis sound as told by the celebrated house drummer from the early days at two iconic Memphis soul studios, Stax Records and Hi Records. Mr. Grimes backed Rufus and Carla Thomas, William Bell, Willie Mitchell, Ann Peebles, and Al Green, among many others. When Hi Records brought Willie Mitchell on board to produce the soul music they were beginning to record, it was Howard Grimes that Willie wanted on drums. He played on virtually every hit to come from Hi Records. Grimes tells the gritty story of growing up in Memphis and drumming his way through the soul years, from its height to its demise. He has a boots-on-the-ground view of the whole scene and doesn’t hold back on the truth and the details. You know that beat and now you get to know the man behind it.

Preston Lauterbach is the author of landmark books The Chitlin’ Circuit, Beale Street Dynasty, Brother Robert: Growing Up with Robert Johnson (as co-author), and Bluff City: The Secret Life of Photographer Ernest Withers.
