May 3, 2018 marks the 15th Anniversary of the Grand Opening of the Stax Museum of American Soul Music and to celebrate, we have some grand plans to commemorate our birthday.
In a special ceremony beginning at 6 pm, Stax Records and Satellite Records icon Floyd Newman will donate his 100-year-old saxophone to the Stax Museum. Floyd has played this particular sax with The Mar-Keys, Otis Redding, Booker T. & the MGs, Eddie Floyd, Arthur Conley, Isaac Hayes, Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklin, Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Wilson Pickett, Etta James, and B.B. King. Floyd holds the distinction of being the first person ever to join B.B. King’s first band is and now one of only two living members along with tenor saxophonist George Coleman.
The Bo-Keys will perform live 7 – 8 pm in Studio A May 3, 2018.
The day of celebration will also include:
- Free museum admission all day to all guests
- Anniversary cake
- A proclamation from Memphis City Mayor Jim Strickland’s office
- Live music 7 – 8 PM by the Bo-Keys, featuring Floyd’s Stax contemporary Howard Grimes on drums
- Food & drinks
- Special guests
